How to say “what's up?” in Spanish — country by country
The dictionary word is ¿qué tal? — Understood everywhere (with ¿cómo estás?), and it is the Spain cell — so Spain is the grey row. Every other column has a local greeting formula. DAMER files these under the key word (onda, más, haber, hablar) with the tag fórm.; the two voseo cells (AR ¿Qué hacés?, CL ¿Cómo estái?) are in no dictionary as formulas and rest on Argentine and Chilean natives. Watch out
- The voseo forms are load-bearing, not typos. AR ¿Qué hacés? is the vos conjugation with final stress — ¿qué haces? marks you as non-Rioplatense. CL ¿Cómo estái? is Chilean voseo (vos estáis → tú estái, used with the pronoun tú), «la más común, culta e inculta en ambientes informales» per ieracub, but «no se escribe… no se usa en ámbito formal». The two voseos differ: Rioplatense is written and used in the imperative (vení, mirá), Chilean is neither. [1][2]
- ¿Qué hacés? is literally «what are you doing?» (riglos) — the greeting reading is contextual, and the reply is not an activity but todo bien / acá andamos. It is almost always followed by the vocative: ¿Qué hacés, boludo? [1][2]
- ¿Qué más? looks like «what else?» to non-Colombians; DAMER tags the greeting sense Co, Ve, Ec only. ¿Quiubo? (DAMER haber, Co) is the pan-Colombian alternative and also Mexican (¿quiúbole?). [1][2]
- klk is the WRITTEN form (RAE: «sigla con ortografía transgresora»); the spoken phrase is ¿qué lo que? with the es elided. The Dominican Redditor gives the etymology ¿Qué es lo que se mueve? — hence the reply ¿qué se mueve? Register: youth, very informal (RAE, Diario Libre). [1][2]
- ¿Qué tal? is not Spain-specific — it is the pan-Hispanic neutral greeting, which is why Spain is the grey row. What is Spain-flavoured is ¿Qué pasa, tío? DAMER cannot be used to prove anything about Spain: it has no Spain data. [1]
- ¿Qué onda? is not Mexico-exclusive: DAMER tags the greeting sense for Mx, Gu, Ho, ES, Ni, Bo, Ch (juv), Ur (p.u.), and the what's-happening sense also Ar; an Argentine (ORL) and a Chilean (Cabeza tuna) both volunteer it. It is still THE Mexico City greeting (DEM, Grekh, mirx). [1][2]
- ¡Habla! is barrio register: Polizón (Perú) says it is not what upper-class Lima teens say — it signals street cred. The friendly form pairs with the Peruvian dude-word: ¡Habla, causa! Neither DAMER nor DiPerú lists it for Peru (DAMER's ¡habla! = Cuba), and content-farm pages claiming it were NOT used as sources. [1][2]
- ¿Qué es la que hay? is street register; the PR native lists ¿qué hay? first. It parallels the Dominican ¿qué es lo que hay? (lo in the DR, la in PR) — the two islands' cells are cousins, so the DO / PR contrast is real but subtle. [1]
- ¿Qué hubo? / ¿Quiubo? is the real pan-American workhorse (DAMER: Mx, ES, Ni, CR, Pa, RD, Co, Ve, Ec, Bo) and would fit MX, CO and DO equally; the card picks the more distinctive local formula for each. [1]

Where we're less sure
- AR (¿Qué hacés?): medium-high — no dictionary lists it as a formula (DAMER hacer has only ¿qué han hecho? for ES, Ni, Co), but three Buenos Aires / Argentine natives use it as the greeting. Native double-check: whether ¿Qué hacés? or ¿Qué onda? / ¿Cómo andás? is the more frequent opener among under-30s in BA.
- CL (¿Cómo estái?): medium-high — not in DAMER (DUECh not reachable); one Chilean native gives the full voseo paradigm and calls tú estái the most common informal form; lautaro's «¿como ttai?» and westopia corroborate. Spelling is unfixed (estái / estai / estay) by the natives' own admission.
- CO (¿Qué más?): high — DAMER fórm. Co + a Colombian native for the alternatives.
- DO (¿Qué lo que?): high — the RAE's own #RAEconsultas answer + a self-declared Dominican Redditor + a Santo Domingo daily. Best-sourced cell on the card.
- ES (¿Qué tal?): medium, grey by design — two Spain natives; the DLE entry could not be fetched (403 / JS-shell snapshots / 429). Nothing contradicts it; it is simply not Spain-specific.
- MX (¿Qué onda?): high — DAMER + DEM + two Mexican natives.
- PE (¡Habla!): LOW — the shipped cell is only partially supported: one Peruvian native attesting habla barrio as a youth greeting, plus an r/PERU post using 'pe causa, habla in the wild. No dictionary (DAMER tags ¡habla! Cuba only; DiPerú has no entry) and no second Peruvian native explaining ¡habla, causa! directly. If the owner wants to hedge: «¡Habla, causa!
