Same thing, eight ways to say it

How to say “right away” in Spanish — country by country

The dictionary word is ahora mismo / enseguida — Ahora mismo, enseguida (also en seguida) and de inmediato are understood and formal-safe in all eight columns. The regional colour is the colloquial one-word booster each place uses instead (ya mismo, al tiro, de una, al toque), and the ahorita minefield: the same diminutive means «in a moment / whenever» in Mexico and Peru, «later» or «a while ago» in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and is simply not used in Spain, Argentina or Chile. Here is what you'll actually hear in eight cities, with the source for every cell.

What people actually say

WhereThey sayAlso · notes
Argentina Buenos Airesya mismoAlso: ya (ya se lo traigo — the Argentine equivalent of others' ahorita); enseguida (one word); al toque (DAMER Ar, Ur) — NOT ahorita, NOT al tiro (Chilean)
Informal only (a Spain poster: «sólo es posible en lo informal»); not in DAMER. Colloquially it blurs with enseguida per a Santa Fe native.
Chile Santiagoal tiroAlso: enseguida; de inmediato; ya — NOT ahorita («en Chile no usamos 'ahorita'»), NOT ya mismo («no se usa»)
DAMER Ch, pop + cult → espon; «se usa mucho en la jerga popular». The Chilean shibboleth.
Colombia Medellínde unaAlso: ya; enseguida; ahorita (Bogotá: «en tan solo unos minutos»); de una vez; inmediatamente; hágale de una (agreement + go)
DAMER pop, Co, Ve, Ec, Py: «Al punto, sin dilación». Also the enthusiastic yes. In Cali enseguida can mean next door.
Dominican Republic Santo Domingoahora mismoAlso: ahora (= right now); ya; enseguida; de inmediato — ahorita = shortly / a while ago, never now
The standard phrase is the local one because the diminutive is booby-trapped: DAMER registers RD ahorita as «Dentro de un momento, más tarde» and «Hace un rato». Only second-hand testimony for the everyday form (see confidence).
Spain MadridenseguidaAlso: ahora mismo (as a request it «denota enfado»); ya; ahora (Spain uses plain ahora where Latin America uses ahorita); ahora después (regional informal) — NEVER ahorita
«En seguida es de lo más normal aquí en España y quiere decir inmediatamente.» Formal-safe; enseguida and ahora mismo are the tier for a waiter or a boss.
Mexico Mexico CityahorititaAlso: luego luego; ahorita (elastic — now, later, or never); ya
Plain ahorita is famously elastic — «segundos, minutos, horas, días, semanas, o nunca» — so when a Mexican needs unambiguous immediacy the diminutive doubles: DAMER ahoritita Mx «Ahora mismo», DEM «Ahoritita regreso». DEM defines ahorita as «Ahora, en este momento, dentro de poco tiempo o cuando sea posible».
Peru Limaal toqueAlso: ahorita / ahoritita (DiPerú «En seguida, pronto» — but elastic: «you can wait another 2 hours»); ya; en una (DAMER Pe); ahora mismo (formal) — un toque = un ratito
DAMER Pe, pop + cult → espon; the DRAE files it as a peruanismo. From football — passing the ball without delay.
Puerto Rico San Juanahora mismoAlso: ahora (= right now); enseguida; ya; de ahora para ahorita (DAMER PR); orita (= later, the PR form often without the a-)
Three PR natives: ahora = now, ahorita / orita = shortly or later. Tesoro PR ahorita: «Hace un rato» / «Dentro de un momento, más tarde». A Mexican spouse and a Puerto Rican husband can wait on each other for hours (lforestier).

Where we're less sure
  • MX (ahoritita): this CORRECTS the shipped card, which showed «ahorita mismo». DEM has ahorita but no ahorita mismo; the only posters who say ahorita mismo are a Madrid-based German and a Chilean. Mexican natives themselves reach for ahoritita (DAMER Mx «Ahora mismo»), luego luego, ya or ahora mismo when they need unambiguous immediacy; the footnote (anything from now to never) is strongly supported. Native double-check on ahoritita vs luego luego as the first choice.
  • AR (ya mismo): supported by natives, not by a dictionary — DAMER mismo has no entry. One Santa Fe native confirms colloquial use; Spain posters gloss it and mark it informal; Chile says unused. Argentines also strongly attest ya (ya se lo traigo) and al toque. Kind set to local-standard (the research file said «colloquial»): it is the unmarked informal form, not slang. Confirm with a porteño that ya mismo beats ya / al toque as the first thing out of their mouth.
  • CO (de una): DAMER-anchored (Co, pop); no country-stated native post found using it — the only gloss with it is a Chilean explaining al tiro; Colombian posters found discuss enseguida and ahorita instead. Native double-check for Medellín. Colombian ahorita = «en unos minutos» (Bogotá), the mild version of the Mexican elasticity.
  • DO (ahora mismo / ahorita = later): dictionary-backed (DAMER RD under both «más tarde» and «hace un rato»), but no Dominican-native post — testimony is an expat who lived in the DR, a poster whose fiancé is Dominican, and a US poster. Ask a Dominican whether ahora mismo or plain ahora / ya is the everyday right away.
  • ES (enseguida): high on usage, no DLE quote (dle.rae.es 403). Spain natives place enseguida and ahora mismo in the formal-safe tier and ya mismo in the informal tier.
  • CL (al tiro), PE (al toque), PR (ahora mismo / ahorita = later): high — DAMER plus natives each; PE also has the DRAE line quoted verbatim by a poster and a DiPerú corpus example; PR has Tesoro PR plus three PR natives.
