Same thing, eight ways to say it
How to say “avocado” in Spanish — country by country
The dictionary word is aguacate / palta — Two co-standard words, not one: aguacate (Nahuatl ahuacatl) in Spain, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean; palta (Quechua) in the Southern Cone and the Andes — the DLE marks palta «Arg., Chile, Perú y Ur.». The card is a clean 4/4 split, and each side understands but does not use the other's word. Here is what you'll actually hear in eight cities, with the source for every cell.
What people actually say
| Where | They say | Also · notes |
|---|---|---|
| Argentina Buenos Aires | palta | DAMER Ar; DLE «Arg.». aguacate is understood but not used. |
| Chile Santiago | palta | A Chilean native doubts many Chileans even know aguacate. palta is also an old street-slang adjective for «elegante» and, per DAMER, a bruise. |
| Colombia Medellín | aguacate | Almost certainly right but the weakest cell: DAMER's country list for the fruit sense omits Co (while listing no palta use for Colombia either); DAMER's own Colombian slang sense of aguacate presupposes it, and a Colombian poster treats palta as the foreign word. |
| Dominican Republic Santo Domingo | aguacate | DAMER RD; no Dominican native post found. |
| Spain Madrid | aguacate | Three Spain natives; Spain grows them (Málaga, Granada). No DLE quote (403). |
| Mexico Mexico City | aguacate | Also: pagua / pahua (a large sweetish variety, per one Mexican poster) The source language of the word; DEM headword. The Nahuatl root also meant testicle, which Mexicans keep alive in albures. |
| Peru Lima | palta | DiPerú headword; DAMER Pe; DLE «Perú». palta also = embarrassment / a gaffe in Peru: paltearse, estar palteado. |
| Puerto Rico San Juan | aguacate | Tesoro PR attests 1877-2010; DAMER PR. |

Watch out
- aguacate = testicle: the Nahuatl etymology and a live pun in Mexico. DAMER aguacate I.3 «m. pl. Ho, Ni. metáf. Testículos. euf; pop + cult → espon.»; pejeman (Mexico): «Con los aguacates, como significan testículo, se hacen en México … muchos juegos de palabras, albures». Ordering two in a Mexican market invites the joke. [1][2]
- palta = embarrassment / a gaffe in Peru. DAMER palta II (Pe: «Equivocación, error», «Vergüenza, turbación», «Susto, temor»); DiPerú palta² «Chasco … Vergüenza … Miedo … Equivocación»; Alea (Peru): «Estoy palteado» = «Estoy avergonzado». ¡Qué palta! in Lima is «how embarrassing», not a fruit. [1][2][3]
- palta = elegant / well-dressed in older Chilean street slang (chileno: «se dice/decía que una persona es un palta, anda palta o es paltona, por decir que es o viste elegante»; Aviador: «ya pasó de moda» — only paltón survives) and a bruise (DAMER palta III.1 «f. Ch. metáf. Moretón»). [1][2]
- aguacate = policeman in Colombia (dated: DAMER II.1 «Co. p.u. Miembro del cuerpo de policía»), a dimwit in El Salvador / Costa Rica / Cuba (DAMER III.1, obsolete) and in PR student slang (Tesoro aguacate² 1989: «Persona bruta»). None is live enough to footnote on the card. [1][2]
- The two-fruits innuendo is NOT shared: Rodal (Chile) says «Un par de paltas puede tener la misma connotación sexual que tienen dos melones»; jorgema (Peru): «nunca le he visto una connotación sexual a las inocentes paltas». Only the Mexican aguacates = testicles pun has dictionary backing. [1][2]
- Each side understands but does not use the other's word: Aviador (Chile) «aguacate se entiende, pero no se usa»; chileno doubts most Chileans know it; fsabroso (Peru, in the US) says people there know it «mas como 'aguacate'» because of the Mexican majority. Saying palta in Madrid or Mexico City marks you as Southern Cone. [1][2]
- Ecuador is aguacate territory despite the Quechua / Palta-people origin (chiwiki: «Acá en Ecuador se lo conoce como aguacate»; DAMER nonetheless lists Ec under palta). Bolivia and Paraguay say palta. [1][2]
- abogado ≠ aguacate — the French / English avocat / avocado confusion does not exist in Spanish; abogado is only the lawyer. And the tree is palto in Chile and Peru (DAMER «palta Hass. Fruto del palto Hass»), aguacatero or aguacate in Mexico. [1][2]

Where we're less sure
- AR, CL, PE (palta): high — DAMER + DLE via Wayback + DiPerú for Peru + natives from each country (Sole!, SpiceMan; chileno, Rodal, Aviador; fsabroso, Alea, jorgema).
- MX (aguacate): high — DEM + DAMER + three Mexican natives. PR (aguacate): high — Tesoro 1877-2010 + DAMER PR.
- ES (aguacate): high on usage, no DLE quote (dle.rae.es 403; Wayback fetch succeeded only for palta). Three Spain natives.
- CO (aguacate): supported only indirectly — flag. DAMER's country list for the fruit sense omits Co, though DAMER's Colombian slang sense II.1 presupposes the fruit word and no source lists palta for Colombia; the one Colombian poster treats palta as the foreign word. Kept as the grey standard cell, not UNVERIFIED; one Colombian sentence would close it.
- DO (aguacate): DAMER RD only; no Dominican native testimony (Reddit 429). Not UNVERIFIED since DAMER is explicit.
- No shipped avocado cell is contradicted; the 4 palta / 4 aguacate split is exactly what DAMER, DLE and every native post give. cura (DLE / DAMER synonym) was not sourced to any of the eight cities and is left off.
