Same thing, eight ways to say it

How to say “a swimming pool” in Spanish — country by country

The dictionary word is piscina — Spain, Chile, Colombia, Peru, PR and understood everywhere. The two big local words are pileta (Argentina/Río de la Plata) and alberca (Mexico). DAMER has no piscina entry (it is the general-Spanish word), so piscina cells rest on native testimony. Here is what you'll actually hear in eight cities, with the source for every cell.

Where we're less sure
  • DO: UNVERIFIED. DAMER tags pileta = piscina for RD, which contradicts the expectation that Dominicans say piscina; a Dominican must settle this before it goes on a card.
  • PE: one Peruvian poster (jorgema) for piscina plus negative evidence on pileta; solid but a limeño confirmation is cheap.
  • PR: two WR posters (one explicitly Puerto Rican native); tesoro.pr has no piscina entry. Fine, but confirm no local variant (e.g. «pool») is common in San Juan.
  • MX: DAMER tags all of Mexico, so no CDMX/rest split is claimed; okay.
  • DLE returned 403 to every fetch; DLE wording (dle.rae.es) is cited via search snippets only.
