How to say “a car” in Spanish — country by country
The dictionary word is automóvil — Understood everywhere, formal/written; in everyday speech the split is coche (Spain, central Mexico) / carro (Caribbean, Colombia, Peru, most of Mexico) / auto (Southern Cone). Here is what you'll actually hear in eight cities, with a cited source for every filled cell.

Watch out
- coche = baby stroller in PR, Peru and Uruguay per DAMER («m. PR, Pe, Ur. carriola, cochecito para bebés»); Chilean (alvx) and Colombian (artfebi) posters say the same for their countries (WR 539968). In Guatemala coche = pig (DAMER coche, Gu: «cerdo»). [1]
- carro = horse cart / shopping cart in AR and CL: juandelsur (Argentina) «Los carros por aquí... van acompañados de un noble equino»; alvx (Chile) «carro... carro de supermercado» (WR 539968). In Spain carro for a car is colloquial/regional only (PACOALADROQUE, Cartagena: «Coloquialmente: carro, buga, haiga»).
- auto is register-marked in Peru: jorgema «El auto, si te quieres pulir» (WR 539968). In Spain «no es fácil escuchar 'auto'» (Jonno).
- DEM Mexico lists both: carro «Cualquier vehículo con ruedas y generalmente con motor... 'Trae un carro último modelo'» and coche. Regional split inside Mexico: Alma Shofner (Sonora) «En Sonora le decimos el carro... Me parece que en el DF le dicen el coche»; Hidrocálida (Aguascalientes) «utilizamos mayormente la palabra coche»; ToñoTorreón (northern México) «en orden de mayor a menor uso: Carro Coche Auto» (WR 539968). - carro público (DO/PR) = shared fixed-route taxi, not a private car (DAMER carro). [1]

Where we're less sure
- DO: only the DAMER country tag; no Dominican native testimony found (WR searches dominicano carro coche returned nothing). Ask a Dominican to confirm carro and the carro público note.
- MX: CDMX = coche rests on two WR posters (mirx, Alma Shofner) plus DEM; DAMER tags carro for Mx:N,S. Worth a chilango confirmation that coche is still the default in the city.
- AR: auto vs coche — posters give both; which is more frequent in Buenos Aires today should be checked with a porteño.
- DLE could not be fetched (403), so Spain's cell relies on WR natives only; DLE is not cited.
