How to say “cool” in Spanish — country by country
The dictionary word is genial / estupendo — The DLE definers («Muy bueno, estupendo»; «Excelente»). There is no neutral pan-Hispanic slang word: chévere is the widest (DLE: Ant., Bol., Col., El Salv., Hond., Pan., Perú, Ven.) but is unknown or unused in Argentina, Chile, Spain and Mexico City, per natives from each. Here is what you'll actually hear in eight cities, with the source for every cell.

Watch out
- bacán = a gay man (derogatory) or a kept man in Cuba: DAMER bacán (2nd headword) «I. 1. m. Cu. Hombre homosexual. pop + cult → espon ^ desp. II. 1. m. Cu. Hombre mantenido por una mujer.» The Chilean cool-word is an insult in Havana. [1]
- bacán = a rich person or a posh place in Argentina and Uruguay (DAMER bacán II «Cu, Bo; Ar, Ur, pop. Persona adinerada … Referido a un lugar, frecuentado por personas adineradas»), a show-off in Peru (DiPerú bacán 3 «Creído, que se ufana constantemente de sí mismo»), and in Colombia a NOUN for a nice person — the adjective for things is bacano (BETOREYES, Milton Sand). ¡Qué bacán! of a thing sounds Peruvian or Chilean, not Colombian. - copado elsewhere = overworked, full or surrounded: DAMER copado I «Ni, RD, Co, Ve, Ec. sobrecargada de trabajo», II «lugar lleno de personas … Ni, Cu, RD, PR, Ec, Bo». Spain natives had never heard the cool sense, and a Sonora native: «no significa excelente, sino lleno o repleto». [1][2]
- chévere is NOT pan-Hispanic: unknown or unused in Argentina (dios_alcohol: «esa palabra es re peruana, acá no existe»; lulilanzi: «En Argentina no la usamos»), Chile (Haurgelmir: «muy poca gente te entendería»), Spain (Dudu678, Realice) and Mexico City (dwqro: a 1970s word; Aquical: «en México es 'Chido' o 'Suave'»). Yucatán is the Mexican exception. [1][2]
- chido is Mexico-only (DAMER Mx; DEM) — an Argentine: «Yo soy de Argentina y no usamos esas palabras». Inside Mexico chido is «más populachero», padre «más normativo» (autrex2811); the north says chilo (Erreconerre); and DAMER padre 3 gives Guatemala a different sense («Muy grande, impresionante»). - guay: DAMER's only entry is Panama («I. 1. Pa. boay.»), unrelated — the Spain sense is DLE-only. Spain's jebi means unfair / shocking, not cool (Elegy, Spain: «¡Qué jebi, no dejaron entrar a Francisco!»), and in El Salvador DAMER jevi II = «drogado». Guatemala's jevi is dated. [1][2][3]
- brutal means violent or huge outside the Southern Cone plus Ecuador and Bolivia (DLE senses 1-4; DAMER interj. Ec, Bo, Ar, Ur). The WR natives who glossed «un cuerpo brutal» / «calidad brutal» as espectacular / awesome were Argentine, Catalan and Peruvian — none Puerto Rican. [1][2][3]
- bárbaro in DAMER for Argentina is a PERSON quality («2. adj. Ec, Ar, Ur. Referido a persona, comprensiva, solidaria o de trato agradable. pop.»); the great! exclamation is DLE 7 / ¡qué bárbaro! with no regional mark. [1][2]
- Register: copado, bacán, bacano, chido and guay are youth / informal but clean; chévere and padre are informal-neutral and usable with anyone (DAMER pop + cult → espon); Colombian chimba and Madrid cojonudo / de puta madre are vulgar — never on the card.

Tesoro-backed for PR: chévere (adj / adv / interj «Expresa aprobación entusiasta», Espontáneo; plus DAMER PR and a PR native who says it is now old-fashioned next to cool / chilín) and bestial («Extraordinario, maravilloso»).
