How to say “a beer” in Spanish (with friends) — country by country
The dictionary word is cerveza — DEM; understood and used everywhere. Every column has a genuinely informal word on top of it; the only grey-ish cell is Spain, where the everyday word (caña) is really the name of the serving you order rather than a nickname for the drink. Here is what you'll actually hear in eight cities, with the source for every cell.

Watch out
- caña: in Spain it is the glass of draft beer you order; in Chile it is the hangover («Ch. Resaca»); in Peru it is a car («Pe. carro, vehículo automotor»; DiPerú «pop. Vehículo automóvil»); in AR/UR/PY/VE/CU/NI it is cane liquor; in CO/VE any hard drink; in Cuba also «Pene. vulg.» A Spaniard ordering una caña in Lima or Santiago is not asking for beer. [1][2][3]
- pola / polo,-a: DAMER has no pola = beer entry (it is a Colombian brand-name coinage); polo,-a in Costa Rica means «de mal gusto, comportamiento rústico... pop ^ desp.» and polo = «campesino» (desp.). [1]
- rubia («blonde» for a lager) is a drug word in Spain and PR per DAMER: «ES, PR. Marihuana o heroína, droga en general. drog.» — the beer sense survives only in fixed phrases («la rubia que nunca engaña» Bo; «rubia vestida de novia» RD) and in older PR usage (Maura 1984 «Copa de cerveza»). [1][2]
- chela is also a common hypocoristic for Graciela/Marcela/Celia (so la Chela can be a person) — noted by contributors at etimologias.dechile.net; contributors there report the DRAE tying it etymologically to chelo «rubio». Not rude anywhere found. [1]
- fría is simply «cold (one)»: DAMER lists it as beer across 13 countries incl. Co, RD, PR, Mx — but NOT Ar, Ch, Pe or ES, where una fría will just sound like an adjective missing its noun. [1]
- birra is shared AR/ES/CO/PR (DHLE Spain+Buenos Aires; Caro y Cuervo list; DAMER birrea PR) — a safe fallback word across four of the eight columns, but not attested for MX/PE/CL in any source consulted. [1][2]
- cheve / chela register: DAMER marks cheve and chela juv. and DEM marks both Popular; DiPerú marks chela pop. — casual but not vulgar; fine with friends, odd in a formal setting.
- schop/chop/chopp: a draft-beer serving, not the drink — Chile schop (DAMER Ch.), Peru/Bolivia/Paraguay/Argentina/Uruguay chop (DAMER). [1][2]
- caguama (MX) is a sea turtle first; DEM's beer sense is the litre bottle, not beer in general. [1]

Where we're less sure
- CL — weakest lexicographic footing: DAMER's chela entry does not tag Chile (only chelear Mx, Pe, Ch and schop Ch. do); the Chilean testimony is a regional website list (curicodechile.cl), a brewer's LinkedIn post and a user-contributed dictionary. DUECh (Academia Chilena) could not be reached (site down/406). A santiaguino should confirm chela is the friends' word and whether schop is just the draft serving.
- CO (Medellín) — UNVERIFIED which word dominates in Medellín. Sources establish pola as the national slang and Bogotá-heavier (El Tiempo); Museo Nacional and Caro y Cuervo list pola/fría/agria/birra without regional tags. Only unnamed social-media comments (not usable) claim pola is Bogotá-only and that Antioquia prefers fría or birra. Ask a paisa: pola vs fría vs birra.
- DO — DAMER RD tag + tesoro.pr darse la fría [RD, PR] are solid; the narrative testimony (Cocina Dominicana) is by a long-resident, non-native named author. A dominicano should confirm fría over plain cerveza among friends and whether birra is used at all.
- ES — the DLE caña entry could not be fetched (dle.rae.es 403; no snippet retrieved); the cell rests on The Local's named journalist + DHLE for birra. Also confirm whether Madrid friends say birra or just caña/cerveza when not ordering.
- PR — tesoro.pr's fría citation is from 1989 and DAMER beer/birrea are 2010; a young sanjuanero should confirm fría is still first choice versus birra or cerveza.
- MX rest-of-Mexico — no source found for regional variation (e.g. cheve in the north); left unsourced.
