How to say “a birthday cake” in Spanish — country by country
The dictionary word is pastel / tarta / torta / bizcocho — There is no pan-Hispanic standard that everyone uses — pastel (RAE headword; Mexico/Central America), tarta (Spain), torta (most of South America, DAMER-tagged for 11 countries), bizcocho (PR/DO) all coexist; the RAE lists all of them. Here is what you'll actually hear in eight cities, with the source for every cell.

- MX trap — torta = a sandwich. DEM: «torta s f I 1 Pan blanco, como la telera o el bolillo, que se parte horizontalmente en dos mitades… y se rellenan con diversos alimentos». DAMER torta 2: «Mx. Pan blanco partido longitudinalmente, que se rellena con diversos alimentos.» Ordering a torta de cumpleaños in CDMX gets you a birthday sandwich (WR Roberto_Mendoza, Javier-Vega, Papalote). [1]
- MX trap — bizcocho (the PR/DO word) is pan dulce, and vulgar. DEM bizcocho: «1 Pan elaborado con harina, huevo, levadura y azúcar… pan dulce… 3 (Popular) Mujer u hombre atractivos… 4 (Popular) Órgano sexual femenino; vagina… 6 (Popular) Individuo cobarde y afeminado». - CO/CU/RD/PR/MX — bizcocho = an attractive person. DAMER II.1: «m-f. Mx, Cu, RD, PR; m. Co. Persona bien parecida y atractiva.» Also Tesoro PR: «Persona bien parecida y atractiva.» and «Cosa fácil.» — so in PR/DO the cake word doubles as a compliment (affectionate/flirty, not rude); in CO the DAMER vulva sense (I.1 Co) sits next to it — footnote for Medellín.
- PE trap — pastel = cocaine base. DAMER pastel: «Pe. Masa básica de cocaína.» — pastel is still used for cake in Peru (WR gisele73), but the drug sense exists. [1]
- PR trap — pastel is a savoury tamal-like dish, tarta is a pie. DAMER pastel: «PR. Plato hecho de masa de arroz y carne, o de plátano, yuca u otras viandas rellena de carne de cerdo». WR la taina: «'Pastel' is a food of mashed plantains, cassava… wrapped in banana leaves». WR lauranazario: «pie = tarta». So the Spanish word tarta and the Mexican word pastel both mean something else in San Juan.
- CL traps — queque = backside; torta = a beating. DAMER queque II.1: «m. Ch. Trasero, nalgas. euf; pop.» DAMER torta V.1: «f. Ch. Golpiza dada a alguien entre varios. pop.» (Chileans still say torta for cake; the beating sense is context-bound.)
- ES — torta is not cake and ponqué is unknown. WR Fernando (Spain): «No sé qué es 'ponqué'.» WR planeta (Spain): «lo de 'ponqué' no lo había oído nunca». WR Fray Luis: «La torta de México equivale al bocadillo de España. La torta de España viene a ser el galletón de Chile.» (The DLE slap sense of torta could not be fetched — 403.)
- CO — ponqué register. WR piraña utria (Colombian): «'Ponqué' no puede clasificarse ni como coloquial ni como vulgar en nuestro país» — it is the neutral word, spelled ponqué, from pound cake (DAMER etymology). Venezuela shares it (DAMER Ve; WR Beachka).
- AR — bizcocho = a small biscuit/cracker (bizcochitos de grasa), and in Uruguay = pastries (facturas). WR Naat (Argentina). So the PR/DO cake word means cracker in Buenos Aires.
- DO — cake and pudín are both DAMER-tagged RD as cake words; bizcocho is the word natives volunteer, but the DAMER RD tag is missing on that sense.

Where we're less sure
- CO Medellín — UNVERIFIED which of torta / ponqué a paisa says for a birthday cake. Both are DAMER Co; one Antioquia-linked poster (BETOREYES) uses ponqué and says Colombians say torta not tarta; another poster ties ponqué to Cundinamarca/Boyacá (Bogotá); a third says all Colombia. The Instituto Caro y Cuervo Diccionario de colombianismos could not be reached (dicol.caroycuervo.gov.co timed out; caroycuervo.gov.co/dicol 404; a search-engine snippet attributes to the 1993 edition «Antioquia, Boyacá, Caldas, Cundinamarca» for ponqué, but the page that said it could not be opened, so treat as unconfirmed). Ask a Medellín native: torta de cumpleaños or ponqué de cumpleaños?
- DO bizcocho — native double-check. Only one self-identified Dominican forum post («Aquí en Rep. dom. tambien decimos Bizcocho») plus a Colombian-Spanish poster's summary. DAMER tags the cake sense PR, Co (not RD) and instead tags RD for cake and pudín. The Diccionario del español dominicano (Academia Dominicana) is not online; academia.org.do search returned nothing for bizcocho. Confirm bizcocho is the Santo Domingo bakery word and whether cake is also said.
- ES tarta — DLE unfetched. Cell rests on three Spain-native WR posts (kreiner, jl_wr, Learning) — consistent, but no institutional quote. Fetch dle.rae.es/tarta from a browser if the card needs it.
