How to say “ok / sure” in Spanish — country by country
The dictionary word is vale / de acuerdo — De acuerdo, está bien and bueno are register-neutral everywhere, and the anglicism OK / okey is universal (Tesoro PR: «anglicismo crudo, usual»). But every column has its own one-word assent particle, and vale, dale, sale and ya are near-shibboleths: natives repeatedly say the other columns' word «suena raro». Spain's vale is the one most learners meet first, so it is the grey row. Here is what you'll actually hear in eight cities, with the source for every cell.

Watch out
- vale outs you as Spain-trained in Mexico: «in Mexico it's only used by people who keeps their links with Spain... everybody would look at me wondering where I learned spanish» (Rogerq70). And dale «suena raro» there (ConceptoAbstracto). Say sale. [1][2]
- DAMER's sale headword is NOT the interjection — it is «Venta... en liquidación» and a Mexican parking-space hustler. The agreement formula lives under salir II.b. Likewise dale is under dar, hágale under hacer, and órale is not in DAMER at all (DEM has it). [1][2][3][4]
- DAMER vale is a false friend: a noun meaning «Amigo, compañero» (Co:N, Ve) and «Campesino» (RD) — nothing about agreement, because Spain usage is outside DAMER's scope. [1]
- listo is not in the Diccionario de colombianismos as an assent particle (the Antioquia article notes DiCol 2019 omits it) and DAMER listo has only ¡listo el pollo! = finished. The Medellín usage rests on the parlache dictionary and the 2021 corpus study. [1][2]
- po is a tag, not a word: it «deriva de 'pues'» and attaches to anything — sí po, no po, ya po. Bare ya is the neutral Chilean form; DAMER registers agreement ya for Ch as pop + cult → espon. [1][2]
- Argentine dale doubles as «hurry up» (¡Dale que llegamos tarde!) and, per Uruguayan posters, is not used as a tag question — that is ¿está bien? / ¿tamos? [1][2]
- Dominican spelling varies: ta' to', ta'to, tato, tató. DAMER tato = «Ch. Zapato» (a Chilean shoe) — unrelated. [1]
- In Puerto Rico the lexicographically registered OK is the anglicism: Tesoro PR lists okay (usual), oká, okey, oki doki, okidoki, oquidoqui, all right (poco frecuente), plus enthusiastic chévere, ¡anjá!, ¡equelecuá! and ¡despiértalo! [1]
- Register: none of the eight is rude. ya po, ta' to' and sale are markedly informal; vale and listo are fine with strangers; dale in the Río de la Plata works at any age but ta is youth-only. [1]

Where we're less sure
- PR (dale): thin for the OK sense. No institutional source gives bare dale = OK for PR — DAMER's dale list omits PR, Tesoro registers only ¡dale huevo! and dale que es tarde, and the one PR native fetched (lauranazario) glosses dale as go ahead. A Reddit r/PuertoRico thread «What is the precise meaning of 'dale'?» exists but could not be fetched (403; Wayback offline) so its poster's country is unverifiable — it is NOT cited as a source. Kept as local-standard per owner decision; the safe institutional alternative is okay / oká. Native double-check advised.
- DO (ta' to'): weak. No DAMER / Tesoro / DED entry (DED not online). Evidence is one self-described Dominican HiNative answer («Ta'to is like Ok») captured from a search snippet because hinative.com returns 403; Dominican-press listicles that also list it are excluded by the source rules. Plausible but unverified; ask a Dominican.
- ES (vale): high on usage, no DLE quote — dle.rae.es returned 403; four Spain-native posts carry the cell.
- AR dale, CL ya (po), MX sale / órale, PE ya: high — institutional dictionary plus country-stated natives each. CL specifically: DAMER gives ¡ya pues! under the Ch agreement sense and three Chilean posters gloss ya po as OK.
- CO (listo): good usage evidence, one academic anchor. The 2021 Universidad de Antioquia corpus study is Medellín-specific and quotes two dictionaries; no WordReference Colombian explicitly says listo = OK (micafe only rejects venga — her source line is a paraphrase, flagged in who). Native double-check optional.
