How to say “dude” in Spanish — country by country
There is no single pan-Hispanic word for this — «dude» as a friendly vocative is slang everywhere. The closest neutral pan-Hispanic vocatives are amigo / hermano / compadre, and DAMER registers loco as a friend-greeting vocative across 15 countries incl. RD, Co, Pe, Ch and Ar. Three of the eight words (boludo, weón, güey) are insults between strangers and endearments between friends — the tone carries it. Watch out
- boludo, weón and güey are insults between strangers and endearments between friends, per country. AR: DAMER boludo has both the insult (II.1 «indolente, que tiene pocas luces… vulg … desp») and the friend formula; Rocus (Argentina): «'Calláte pedazo de boludo!' (Un insulto) o 'Che boludo, ¿vamos al bar?' (como una expresión amistosa)»; ORL: «Basicamente es un insulto equivalente a 'asshole'… ahora todos y todas se llaman mutuamente 'boludo'». - che is not «dude», it is «hey»: DLE and DAMER define it as an attention-call formula and an Argentine native translates it as hey. The friend vocative in Buenos Aires is boludo, usually che, boludo. And in Mexico 'che is clipped pinche (DAMER che II «Mx. despreciable, vil. pop desp»; Edher: «Se usa para decir 'pinche'»). [1][2]
- Chilean spelling: the DAMER headword is huevón with variants güeón / güevón; weón is texting orthography (Vampiro: «En Chile lo normal es escribirlo con 'H'»; Cabeza tuna: «se tiende a escribir con W»). Chilean voseo follows it: «¿como ttai?», «no seai huevón». [1][2]
- huevón is an insult in Colombia, not a friend word (Gabino, Bogotá: «En Colombia es una palabra ofensiva… Los jóvenes se dicen gon (corto de huevón) como un cariñito»), and in Mexico it means lazy (DAMER huevón I.2 «Mx… Persona holgazana, poco trabajadora. vulg; pop»; paprika, danielfranco). Only Chile and, between friends, Lima use it as dude. [1][2][3]
- pata (the Peruvian also-word) has a hostile vocative use (DiPerú pata 3 «vulg. Usado como vocativo para dirigirse negativamente a un desconocido»: «Oye, pata, no te metas») and means lesbian in the DR and PR (DAMER pata VI.1 «f. RD, PR. Lesbiana. pop + cult → espon ^ desp») — do not export it to the Caribbean. DAMER causa III is also «RD. Llaga». [1][2][3]
- pana is pan-Caribbean, not PR-exclusive (DAMER: EU, Mx, Pa, RD, PR, Ve, Ec, Bo; DLE: Ec, PR, RD, Ve). In Chile pana is a car breakdown (DAMER pana II «Ch. Fallo o avería») or the liver (III «Ch. Hígado») — in Santiago your pana is what stranded you, not your buddy. [1]
- Dominican manín is not in any reachable dictionary for the DR (DAMER tags it Guatemala only; the Academia Dominicana's DED is offline). DAMER does have manito (RD) and pana (RD); if a lexicographic anchor is wanted, pana is the safe swap and manín the more Dominican-flavoured word. [1][2][3]
- tío = dude is Spain-only: DAMER has no friend sense of tío for any American country (only Cuban mi tío as a confidence address; Ni, Ch tutor). Say it in Lima and you have addressed someone's uncle. [1]
- Register: tío, parce, pana, causa and manín are safe with any friend; boludo, weón and güey are the three tone-dependent words, and all three carry vulg / desp dictionary marks alongside the friend sense.
